While I’m not completely sure if Launch was created by a European-based developer, I’m positive that whoever created it was heavily influenced by European culture and style. Everything from the artwork to the game’s objective has more meaning that the initial impression that one would gather from first glance of their mind’s eye. From our understanding, the player is a live round in a rocket launcher making it’s way through the barrel toward invading aliens. Yet, even inside the barrel, what you would think is a linear existence is one that requires a quick yet steady hand to elude the clockwork in your path as you try to make your way out. If we had to compare it to any existing game, the original Star Wars Arcade with vector graphics, in which you elude towers on the surface of the Death Star in your X-Wing, would be the most ideal. With highly stylized graphics and solid controls, check out this wildly unique and literal take on a First Person Shooter, which feels like the product of an orgy between Stanley Kubrick, François Truffaut, and Guillermo del Toro. Price: 99¢.

Evacuation

Remember Aliens when Ripley opened the cargo bay doors, which led to the Alien Queen getting sucked into space by the vacuum? Come to think of it, that happened in Alien as well as Alien Resurrection. This is probably why Alien³ was the worst of the four movies. Anyway, let me let you in on a little secret: those aren’t really movies. Instead, all three movies (let’s not count Alien³) are blueprints for this clever game created by Bennett Foddy and Ryan Chisholm. Evacuation is one part strategy game and one part puzzle game in a sci-fi setting with a duel objective for success: get rid of the aliens and save the crew. Tap any color door to simultaneously open other like-colored doors to position aliens and crew members into desired areas. With the timely opening of the cargo bay doors, you too can be a hero just like Ripley. However, once you lose all your crew, it’s “GAME OVER, MAN! GAME OVER!” Cool graphics and a creative premise make this a game not to miss. Price: 99¢.

ToMaCow

You’re probably thinking, “Dude, another game about aliens abducting cows? For real?” Yes, for real, but honestly, while the theme is similar to another game (Udder Chaos) that we reviewed about a month ago, ToMaCow is much different, especially in regards to graphics and gameplay. Created by the fun folks at mobileFlavour, play as a farmer who has a major problem with aliens trying to abduct and/or eat his small herd of four cows. His solution: shoot an unlimited supply of tomatoes through what looks like an old vacuum cleaner at waves upon waves of enemies knocking them unconcious or ultimately destroying them. Your part: help his aim by tilting your iPhone/iPod Touch into positions that target the right spots to hit the aliens. Does it work? Will you both succeed? Now that’s why we play the game and with this one, you won’t be disappointed as it’s pretty addictive and feels just at home on the device for any occasion. With crisp and cute anime-style graphics, a perfect soundtrack, easy controls and simple objective, it’s quite the value. Price: 99¢.

Little Runner

If you remember awhile back, I was looking for a Lode Runner clone and I was so obsessed about finding one that I even used Bing.com. Damn Microsoft and their media blitz! Unfortunately, I didn’t find one, but instead, I got hooked by this cute and simple game recently released by Red Rocket Games. Little Runner is an exceptional concept that just works perfectly on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Play as an alien from a “strange race of Runners”, whose sole desire is to run. To those ends, you gotta help him out by moving slabs of stone up and down using the touchscreen. Ensure his pace is uninterrupted by any hazards caused by uneven ground, such as high steps and deep pits. Get scored based on travel distance and attempt to improve your high score each time. This should tide me over until I get a fairly loyal Lode Runner clone or at least until I get my hands on a iPhone 3G S. Highly recommended for its creativity, easy controls, and addictive nature. Price: 99¢.

Udder Chaos

Reminiscent of Williams Electronics’ Defender, fend off waves of aliens abducting cattle on a farm by shooting them or if unmanageable, use a smart bomb to clear the level. The frenetic pace and solid graphics, especially the special effects, accompanied by a heart-pounding techno track makes this a winner. With the recent addition of Touch-2-Shoot, watch your scores jump into another stratosphere. Global leaderboards add to replay value. Udder Chaos is highly recommended. Price: 99¢.
