I’d apologize if it wasn’t for the fact that I couldn’t really be sincere about it. Yes, I’ve been away from the site working hard at my day job, but that wasn’t the reason. The absolute truth? Okay, well, honestly, it’s football season. There, I said it. I’ve been watching college and pro football every opportunity I get and if you add the end of the regular baseball season, preseason NBA hoops, and the start of the NHL season, you’ll understand why I’ve been away for quite awhile. Yet, I’ve re-committed myself, especially after seeing a slew of great games being released, such as blastination by bithoard games. Start off with a simple premise: collect all objects in each level using a ball, which you must direct by creating temporary barriers with swipes of your finger. Basically, the barriers act a bit like stationary paddles and platforms which you use to bounce the ball off of at angles to get all objects. The faster you are, the more points you get as well as the treat of a frenetic pace, which gets your heart pumping. Great graphics, especially the visual effects, just adds to a player’s drive to play even more. An exceptional game through and through for such a low price. Price: 99¢.

Play Football

Growing up a couple of blocks away from Candlestick Park, I’m obviously first and foremost a San Francisco 49ers fan, but I’m also a fan of all Bay Area teams, which includes the Oakland Raiders. As long as they aren’t playing the Niners, I always cheer for the Raiders and yesterday was no exception against the San Diego Chargers. I was hoping to see one of the Raiders defenders break through the Chargers offensive line and re-create the infamous Joe Theismann leg injury on Philip Rivers, whose smarmy face just annoys the crap out of me. Instead, I begin to see there might be some truth to those conspiracy theories by Raiders fans that the NFL really wants to keep the organization down. There’s no doubt that Louis Murphy had a TD. I mean, I knew it. My mom knew it. My 2-year old son knew it. There are probably tribes in the Amazon untouched by modern civilization, who knew it as well. Anyway, to get over such a despicable loss, I turned to my iPhone and played this gem of an app, Jebudas Communications’ Play Football, which helped me ease the pain. With three difficulty levels (high school, college and pro), play as the head coach trying to call the right plays at the right time. Before selecting among the over 130 plays, first start customizing your team name, colors, and field type. Listen to the on-going commentary in the game and follow the tracked stats for each indiviual player. Lead your team to victory while unlocking more plays in the process. Overall, this excellent head coaching sim game is a nice compliment to those immersed in all things football (fantasy league and latest Madden) during this time of year. Highly recommended. Tilt-a-Ball

It’s always an honor when Game Industry vets like Rich Adam and Ed Rotberg from Mine Shaft Entertainment contact you for any reason. These guys worked at Atari when it was on top of the video game arcade world in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They have the original Missle Command and BattleZone listed to their credits. Later, Rich also worked on the first versions of John Madden Football and PGA Golf Tour at EA. Whether as producers, designers, or programmers, these guys did it all contributing to a craft that only a lucky few ever get to make into a career. So, obviously, the pleasure was all mine when they asked if I would look at their Tilt-a-Ball game for the iPhone. A brick breaker game with a twist: instead of a paddle, just use the accelerometer to tilt the device in the desired direction in which you want the ball to go. With a bubble level tool built-in, use various brick types and special balls throughout the game to advance levels as well as your score before time runs out. Overall, a simple yet well-executed concept, which you would come to expect from seasoned pros like these. Price: 99¢
