App of My Eye » Movies http://appofmyeye.com The Best iPhone Apps You'd Never See Thu, 08 Sep 2011 02:56:56 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Ghost Stories From Around The World http://appofmyeye.com/2009/10/20/ghost-stories-from-around-the-world/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/10/20/ghost-stories-from-around-the-world/#comments Tue, 20 Oct 2009 08:59:24 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=1504 Ghost Stories FATW iTunes PageGrowing up, the younger of my two older sisters had a big influence on me.  As we were only 8 years apart, we had our ups and downs fighting as siblings do, especially since she was the baby of the family until I came along.  In between getting on each other’s nerves, we did have our peaceful moments, which strangely enough came to us in the most tense of times: watching scary movies.  While my sis would watch any scary movie imaginable, I believed she was quite the connoisseur knowing the difference between camp versus a real thrill fest.  After all, we had Bob Wilkins (R.I.P.) and John Stanley to thank for Creature Features on KTVU as we were growing up.  So, we were battle hardened so to speak as the 80′s came and went producing some of the finest (Poltergeist and The Thing) and worst (Silver Bullet anyone?) flicks in the genre.  Yet, through it all, we both knew the best way to scare someone is by telling them a scary story in the dark, especially at night, with just a flashlight or a candle providing the only source of light.  With Halloween fast approaching, I’m reminded of my sister once again through an application like Ghost Stories From Around The World by Joe Kwon, Inc., which takes user submissions of supposedly true accounts and adds them to an easy to navigate archive. It’s pretty ingenious really: new content provided by users just like you and me that is used to populate an entire paid application.  But the real winners here are the users themselves, who now have a creative outlet to make good scary stories just in time for Halloween.  A well-made app with the promise of new content daily, I wish my sister was alive to enjoy it with me…  But I’m sure she already has in spirit.  Rest in peace, sis!  Price: $1.99.

]]> http://appofmyeye.com/2009/10/20/ghost-stories-from-around-the-world/feed/ 1 Airport Mania: First Flight http://appofmyeye.com/2009/08/27/airport-mania-first-flight/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/08/27/airport-mania-first-flight/#comments Thu, 27 Aug 2009 07:48:24 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=1304 Airport Mania: First Flight iTunes PageWhen you’re stuck in queue at an airport, beyond the obvious need for security following 9/11, you have to wonder how hard can it be to run an airport smoothly.  Why does the experience have to be a pain the butt?  Often times, it is a combination of showing up to DMV on any normal day without an appointment and being stuck at any major grocery store before it closes for Thanksgiving.  Sure, after watching Pushing Tin starring John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett, and Angelina Jolie’s nipples, I understand the stress behind running certain facets of an aiport, such as an air traffic controller.  But please, the rest of the staff are barely qualified to be human.  In any case, to temper my thinning patience during any air travel, I’ve made it a point to bring Airport Mania: First Flight with me, since this time management strategy game allows me to vent my frustrations, while sympathize with my fellow ma-ugh… carbon-based lifeform?!  Whatever the case, with 8 different airports containing 84 levels, there is a lot of great gameplay to experience in this whimsically visual game.  Plus, with built-in achievements and cool extras, you will understand why lots of users have been requesting for more levels to feed their new found addiction.  Highly recommended.  Price: $2.99.

]]> http://appofmyeye.com/2009/08/27/airport-mania-first-flight/feed/ 0 Now Playing http://appofmyeye.com/2009/06/07/now-playing/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/06/07/now-playing/#comments Sun, 07 Jun 2009 07:18:04 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=604 Now Playing iTunes PageSometimes I wish we hadn’t promised to only recommend the best apps outside of the general Top 50 and the Top 50 for all other categories, since there are apps which I think can’t be beat.  However, if it wasn’t for our mission statement, I wouldn’t have found Now Playing, which I believe beats the more popular Flixster for a couple of reasons.  First,  the app provides additional reviews from Metacritic, which are far more reliable than the user reviews from its rival.  Next, while it may not support Facebook, it does provide access to Netflix, which is much more convenient than having a separate 3rd party Netflix app installed.  Lastly, as advertised, when offline, local theater and movie information is still accessible using this app, which is major plus for iPod Touch users.  As an additional bonus, both foreign country and language support are currently available and expanding with each update.  At the very least worth checking out.  Price: Free.
