GeoGeo Wars

Would you believe that I play games based on current weather conditions? Seriously, it’s no joke. During the late Spring and Summer months, I’m primarily playing Adventure and RPG games, such as Lost Odyssey and LEGO Batman: The Videogame. In those types of games, I’m going at my own pace rather than just plain reacting like when I play first-person shooters (FPS) or other types of ‘twitch’ games. Sometimes it’s just too darn hot to play a game that will just add to your discomfort. This usually includes games like Street Fighter IV on the Xbox 360 and most games for the Nintendo Wii. Honestly, if I wanted a workout, I’d go play basketball. However, as we’re now in the middle of the Fall months and the temperature is steadily decreasing with each passing day, I’m back on both FPS and Nintendo Wii games. Working up a sweat playing such games definitely helps combat the chilly conditions and saves on using the heater. But now I’m taking it on the road with games like adot’s GeoGeo Wars, an impressive homage to Geometry Wars with unique additions to make an already outstanding game just a tad better, especially on the iPhone. With a variety of enemies attacking you eventually from all sides, you frantically control the ship using a finger to swipe all over the level while auto-fire is active. Furthermore, if you’re in a jam, be aware of power-ups as they become available. Its excellent polish shows as soon as you pick up the game and quickly understand what to do: kill lots of enemies, while trying to survive. Currently employing Open Feint for leaderboards and bragging rights, and soon to have more levels, this game already has more bang for the buck. Recommended. Price: 99¢.

iCircus Robot

Don’t be misled by the title: there are no clowns in this game. Well, at least not the type of clowns that you remember as a kid. You know what I’m talking about: those velvet paintings your mom and dad used to buy from the mall, which all had clowns that looked like demonic versions of Red Skelton’s famous alter ego stolen from Rod Serling’s Night Gallery. Their effect on you was so severe that each time you did go to a real circus you had the same feeling come over you as you do now watching Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator. No amount of cotton candy and snow cones could ever calm you down. Not that it should since they contain more sugar than sugar. Anyway, so what can you expect from iCircus Robot if not scary clowns? How about a smooth highly-stylized 2D side-scrolling game the likes of which is rarely seen in the App Store? Very much paying tribute to arcade games of old, you play as a robot that needs to jump through or over obstacles. Using the accelerometer, tilt to one side or the other to move, while timing finger taps on the screen to perform the jumps. Kinda reminiscent of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong in some ways, my only criticism of this game is that it currently only has four missions. But considering the quick increase in difficulty as you do progress, it lasts a lot longer than you think. Plus, there is the promise of more to come. Price: 99¢.

iCombat

A couple of months ago, I was looking for a tank game along the lines of the old Atari vector tank game, Battlezone, but instead, I ran into a slew of games, which were closer in nature to EA’s Desert Strike and Nintendo’s Battalion Wars. Through it all, I eventually did find a comparable tank game to an Atari classic, but it wasn’t Battlezone. As the name suggests, iCombat pays tribute to one of the more popular games to originate from the Atari 2600, Combat, while updating graphics, gameplay, and adding online features. First, with the simple objective of defeating all enemies thrown at you in each level, the mazes themselves are presented in 3/4 overhead view in landscape mode. Therefore, you get to see all the action in a single map, which definitely helps when the addition of power-ups to help boost your success is essential. Next, online head-to-head gameplay via WiFi and global online leaderboards to measure yourself against the best in the world increases replay value tremendously. But the biggest improvement in the 50 level game has to be the controls, which now allows you to steer either by tilt or by a virtual directional key. Either way, it’s easier than ever to be evasive while leading your target for the kill shot. Extremely challenging and fun. Price: 99¢.
