App of My Eye » Obstacles http://appofmyeye.com The Best iPhone Apps You'd Never See Tue, 10 Nov 2009 10:00:03 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.9.2 en hourly 1 Darkest Fear http://appofmyeye.com/2009/09/17/darkest-fear/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/09/17/darkest-fear/#comments Thu, 17 Sep 2009 09:41:09 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=1379 Darkest Fear iTunes PageWhen I first saw this game a couple of years back on a BREW device (yes, believe it), I thought it was one of the best games you could hope to play on mobile.  Back then, Darkest Fear by Finnish developer, Rovio Mobile, had a light, yet compelling story, the graphics were excellent and added to the overall horror-survival motif, and the puzzles were pretty challenging.  But the question is: does it translate well to the iPhone?  Well, since FISHLABS was able to take what I thought was THE best game on mobile in Galaxy On Fire 5-6 years ago and bring a perfect translation with some added bells and whistles to the iPhone, then there should be no doubt that Rovio Mobile can do the same…  And they did!  The technical capabilities of the iPhone obviously improve the graphics of the game, which makes an already eerie game even more eerie as the shading for the shadows perfectly adds to the heart-thumping excitement.  On top of all that, considering it is set in a hospital, the glow of the lights reminds one of The Shining or even Saw.  As one colleague put it years ago, “It’s one of the scariest mobile games I’ve played because of the sheer anticipation alone.”  It’s true now on the iPhone as it was back then.  Check it out!  Price: $3.99.

]]> http://appofmyeye.com/2009/09/17/darkest-fear/feed/ 0 Trace http://appofmyeye.com/2009/05/28/trace/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/05/28/trace/#comments Thu, 28 May 2009 07:11:14 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=472 Trace iTunes PageAs I continued to rummage through the App Store, I realized there are a lot of apps that use very unspectacular graphics.  It’s like some devs decided to use clip art or Wingdings rather than deal with artists, which is understandable with those fragile egos.  Just kidding!  Of course, on occasion, you run into a game like Trace, which basically says to you “Look, this may look like a child’s fingerpainting, but at least, you will never forget me.”  It’s true: I never will, but it is also because of it’s creative gameplay of drawing paths using the touch screen to avoid obstacles in the fastest time possible.  The game is a puzzler and a platformer all in one.  With 6 unique worlds and 120 levels, you really can’t ask for anything more, including a break on the price… because it’s free.  Price: Free.

]]> http://appofmyeye.com/2009/05/28/trace/feed/ 1 Cube Runner http://appofmyeye.com/2009/05/27/cube-runner/ http://appofmyeye.com/2009/05/27/cube-runner/#comments Wed, 27 May 2009 08:24:14 +0000 Art http://appofmyeye.com/?p=464 Cube Runner iTunes PageWhile looking for a Lode Runner clone (one of my all time faves) in the App Store, I ran into this little gem, which reminded me of Atari’s Night Driver and the original Star Wars coin-op arcade machines from the late 70’s and early 80’s respectively.  Gosh, I’m dating myself.  One of the first games available when the App Store launched, Cube Runner is a simple, yet addictive game of maneuvering your ship through a maze of cubes strewn about in your path.  In a behind-the-ship 3rd person POV, tilting your device veers your ship to the left or right narrowly avoiding on-coming obstacles.  Don’t let the graphics fool you: this is a fun game, which has an almost therapeutic quality the better you do.  Definitely worth downloading.  Price: Free.
